In 1912, as part of a law aimed at controlling the itinerant trade, the French Republic imposed the carrying of an Anthropometric Identity Card on a specially-created administrative category, the “Nomads”.
Through the return to the families concerned of photographs contained in the Carnets Anthropométriques, the film offers an insider's view of the extraordinary heterogeneity of the “Gens du Voyage”. As a counterpoint, historians reflect on the consequences of this law.
By questioning the permanence of a legal exception at the heart of the French Republic, this film invites us to reflect on the past and present situation of the “Gens du Voyage”.
